Chlorella detoxifies your body from heavy metals

Updated: Sep 4

I'm sharing this article primarily because I couldn't find any chlorella that didn't come from the Great China Sea. Most chlorella comes from China and is too contaminated, which I didn't want. I wanted chlorella from a clean sea or an indoor farm.

I eventually discovered that Dr. Joseph Mercola (American physician) was a huge advocate for pure chlorella. He features several scientific articles on chlorella on his own blog and website.

Dr. Joseph Mercola: You may have heard of chlorella because it's added to various health products. The name comes from a combination of two Greek words:

"chloros" (green) and "ella" (small).

Health benefits of chlorella

Chlorella has been labeled a “superfood” because it contains these vital nutrients:

Chlorophyll: It can help protect your body from infections, relieve constipation, promote optimal blood pressure levels, cleanse your liver and blood, and eliminate fungus.

Antioxidants: such as lutein, alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid, and zeta-tocopherol. Chlorella extract has the ability to eliminate free radicals. These results come from a molecular and cellular biochemical animal study in rats induced with the chemical naphthalene.

Other nutrients: Chlorella contains essential nutrients such as vitamin K, vitamin B12, folate, iron, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, polysaccharides, and protein.

Extensive research has also linked chlorella to several health benefits. For example, this microalgae can help with:

Detoxification of the body: Studies have shown that chlorella can help eliminate heavy metals and pathogens. Its detoxification benefits are even better when combined with an infrared sauna.

Boosting the immune system: Chlorella supplements may reduce the risk of immune system disorders and improve immune system function.

Improves quality of life in people diagnosed with breast cancer: Breast cancer patients who took chlorella and chlorella extract experienced fewer instances of fatigue and noticed improvements in their dry skin.

Normalizes blood sugar levels: Chlorella supplements were effective in addressing insulin sensitivity in rats, showing its benefit in improving blood sugar levels in people struggling with insulin resistance.

Regulates Blood Pressure Levels: Chlorella supplements are abundant in the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which helps lower high to normal blood pressure levels in subjects.

Regulates Cholesterol Levels: In 2014, Nutrition researchers found that chlorella supplements helped lower triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in individuals with hypercholesterolemia (too much cholesterol).

Counteracts negative effects of oxidative stress: Chlorella extract helped protect rats' bodies from liver damage and other oxidative stress-induced changes in the body.

Contributes to healthy brain function: Because chlorella can combat oxidative stress, this supplement may not only improve brain function but also reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Promotes a better metabolism: the purifying and detoxifying effect of chlorella promotes your metabolism.

Where does Chlorella come from?

Chlorella is primarily derived from single-celled freshwater algae called Chlorella vulgaris and can be purchased as a powder, supplement, or liquid extract.

Chlorella is a freshwater algae belonging to the green algae family. It has beneficial effects on health. It naturally occurs in lakes and rivers in Southeast Asia. It requires water, warmth, and especially plenty of sunlight.

Due to the enormous population growth in certain cities and the associated food shortages, extensive research has been conducted on this microalgae. Even the international space industry is interested in this plant.

Most chlorella comes from China, where the sea and soil are very polluted and often contain heavy metals.

Therefore, there's no point in detoxing yourself from heavy metals with a supplement that itself contains heavy metals. That's why I make my own chlorella in an indoor grow room.

This indoor cultivation in specially designed tanks ensures a high-quality, controlled yield that has not been exposed to all kinds of contamination.

It is also packaged in a dark glass jar to maintain quality and therefore contains no harmful plastic.

If you plan on taking chlorella, do so slowly, as it can take some time for your body to adjust to this microalgae.

Studies on Chlorella

Chlorella has been the subject of various studies for many years and researchers have concluded that it may be useful against certain diseases or conditions, such as:

Liver cancer: A 2009 study published by Zhejiang University Science B showed that chlorella vulgaris extract inhibited the development of tumors.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1: A 2013 study found that people with chronic hepatitis C infection were able to tolerate chlorella supplements and had reduced liver enzyme ALT levels.

Digestive disorders such as diarrhea: A February 2017 article found that supplementing with chlorella and spirulina led to good gut health in weaned piglets, alleviating digestive problems such as diarrhea.

What to look for in a chlorella supplement?

If you want to take chlorella supplements, make sure it's broken cell wall chlorella, as this type of product is the only way your body can absorb the nutrients from this algae. Buy chlorella supplements from a reputable manufacturer and ensure that:

-It is labeled as broken cell wall chlorella (so it can be digested well).

-It is organic and contains no synthetic ingredients.

-The product has been extensively tested for quality.

-There is no chlorella from China.

Chlorella side effects

When you first start using chlorella, do so gradually. Even if you think you're healthy, you should start slowly, as taking chlorella supplements can make you feel a little unwell. This is because the toxins are being removed.

Minor side effects that may occur include:

-Diarrhea

-Nausea

-Gas

-Stomach cramps

-Green color in stool

-Sensitivity to the sun

- This can be alleviated by limiting your time in the sun to a few minutes at a time, and by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and light clothing with sleeves when you go out.

I further advise avoiding chlorella unless approved by your doctor if:

-Pregnancy or breastfeeding

-Taking anticoagulants such as warfarin, because it contains vitamin

The K content of chlorella can reduce its effect.

-A compromised immune system, because chlorella increases the amount

bad bacteria in your intestines can increase and cause reactions.

-Sensitivity to iodine, an element found in chlorella. It can

cause an allergic reaction .

-Allergy to mold.

Finally, remember that chlorella may contain iron. While levels of this mineral are usually not problematic in women because menstrual cycles frequently cause iron loss, excessive amounts are commonly found in men and postmenopausal women. This can lead to health problems such as iron overload, meaning you should regularly monitor your blood iron levels, particularly your serum ferritin and GGT levels.

Note the following ideal amounts:

Ferritin

30 to 40 nanograms per milliliter (ng/ml) or 75 to 100 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L) for adult males and non-menstruating females.

GGT

Less than 16 units per liter (U/L) for men, or less than 9 U/L for women.

If your iron levels are higher than the ideal recommendations, this may be problematic and should be addressed by either following chlorella supplementation or by undergoing blood donations two to three times a year or through regular phlebotomies .
