Foreword

Batmanghelidj, Fereydoon (1931-2004) is an Iranian physician who conducted extensive research on water and salt. He published his research in a book. One book has been translated into Dutch. His other books are in English.

Book: Water, the cheapest medicine. You're not sick, you're thirsty (Dutch)

When I read his book I was impressed by what he had discovered about water and salt.

In his book "Water, the Cheapest Medicine," he listed 46 reasons why we should drink water and 27 hidden wonders of salt. We're talking about pure, natural salt, not table salt.

In his book he describes the importance of water, minerals and salt and he describes many ailments that are due to a deficiency of water, salt and minerals.

At the bottom of the blog you will find more information about the doctor's studies, research and books.

In a state of dehydration you usually don't feel thirsty

Most of us are chronically dehydrated. We can be mildly, moderately, or severely dehydrated. We can mistake hunger for thirst.

People tend to eat instead of drink.

When this behavior becomes a habit, the body learns to adapt to this water loss, and the feeling of thirst disappears. The hypothalamus controls thirst and sometimes malfunctions due to poor lifestyle. The loss of this feeling is the body's adaptation to a perceived water deficit, but it can be trained to become stronger again.

Coffee, tea, sugary drinks, soft drinks, and alcohol are dehydrating. The stress of chronic dehydration causes the brain to release stress hormones, including endorphins. Endorphins are the body's natural opiates that help the body cope with environmental crises. The craving for coffee, tea, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages is an endorphin addiction.

To get rehydrated inside and outside the cells, it can take days for sufficient water to be absorbed, because the cells slowly become soaked.

After about eight days of good hydration, the hypothalamus resumes its function. You'll start to see benefits, such as faster elimination and increased energy. When your hypothalamus returns to normal, your body will function normally again, and your body will recognize thirst in a timely manner.

It might be a cliché, but it's a lifestyle change. Anything chemical, synthetic, or sugary dehydrates your body. Coffee is also dehydrating.

It's especially important for older adults to stay well-hydrated, as the sensation of thirst fades over time, just as vision does. Elderly people who die are often severely dehydrated.

46 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water

1-It gives life

Without water there is no life.

2- Lack of water damages the body

A relative deficiency of water first suppresses certain parts of the body and ultimately damages or destroys those parts.

3-It gives energy

Water is the most important source of energy: it is the body's cash flow.

4-Water generates electrical and magnetic energy

Water generates electrical and magnetic energy in every cell of the body. It provides the power to sustain life.

5-It is a binding agent for cell structure

Water is the binding agent in the building material of cellular structure.

6. Water prevents damage to your DNA

Water prevents damage to your DNA and ensures effective repair, resulting in less abnormal DNA being created.

7-It strengthens your immune system

Water significantly increases the effectiveness of the immune system in the bone marrow, including its effectiveness against cancer. All immune system mechanisms are formed in the bone marrow.

8-Water is a solvent for your food and nutrients

Water is the primary solvent for all food, vitamins, and minerals. It is used in the digestion of food into smaller particles, their eventual metabolism, and their absorption.

9-Water puts energy in your food

Water transfers energy into food, and the food particles can then provide the body with energy during digestion. That's why food without water has no energy value for the body.

10-Water extracts essential substances from food

Water increases the rate at which the body absorbs essential substances from food (substances that the body cannot produce itself).

11-Water is used for transportation

Water is used to transport all substances in the body.

12-Water helps red blood cells absorb oxygen

Water increases the efficiency of red blood cells in absorbing oxygen in the lungs.

ree

13-Water carries waste products to the lungs for removal

When water reaches a cell, it releases oxygen and carries waste gases to the lungs for elimination.

14-Water Helps your body remove waste

Water carries toxic waste from various parts of the body and takes it to the liver and kidneys for elimination.

15-Water is a lubricant for joints

Water is the main lubricant in the joint spaces and helps prevent arthritis (joint inflammation) and back pain.

16-Water is necessary for the intervertebral discs

Water is used in the intervertebral discs to create shock-absorbing water cushions.

17-Liquid laxative

Water is the best liquid laxative and it prevents constipation.

18-Heart & blood vessels

Water reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

19-Capillaries of the heart and brain

Water prevents the capillaries of the heart and brain from becoming clogged.

20-Cooling systems

Water is extremely important for cooling systems.

21-Electrical energy for brain

Water provides us with power and electrical energy for all brain functions, especially thinking.

22-Neurotransmitters

Water is primarily needed for the efficient production of all neurotransmitters, including serotonin.

23-Hormones

Water is mainly needed for the production of all hormones made by the brain, including melatonin.

24-ADHD

Water can help prevent ADHD in children and adults.

ree

25-Increases your concentration

Water increases efficiency at work. It extends your concentration time.

26-Water is a natural soft drink

Water is a better energy drink than any other soft drink and it has no side effects.

27-Stress and depression

Water helps reduce stress, nervousness and depression.

28-Sleep Pattern

Water restores normal sleep patterns.

29-Fatigue

Water helps reduce fatigue. It gives you energy.

30-Skin

Water smooths the skin and helps reduce aging.

31-Eyes

Water gives shine and sparkle to the eyes.

32-Eye disorders

Water helps prevent glaucoma (an eye condition that can lead to blindness).

33-Bone marrow

Water normalizes the blood production systems in the bone marrow. It can prevent leukemia and lymphoma (lymph node cancer).

34-Immune System

Water is absolutely necessary to make the immune system more effective in various areas, to fight infections and cancer cells as soon as they are formed.

35-Water thins the blood

Water thins the blood and prevents it from clotting during circulation.

36-Menstruation

Water reduces premenstrual pain and hot flashes.

ree

37-Pressure differences in blood circulation

Water and the heartbeat create the dilution and pressure differences in the bloodstream, which prevent particles from settling on the blood vessel wall.

38-Body has no water supply

The human body doesn't have any water reserves from which it can draw water. This is why you need to drink water regularly and throughout the day.

39-Sex hormones

Dehydration inhibits the production of sex hormones, one of the main causes of impotence and decreased libido.

40-Hunger versus thirst

Water keeps the sensations of hunger and thirst separate.

41-Weight Loss

Drink water regularly. You'll also feel less hungry. Dehydration makes you eat more and feel less thirsty.

42-Deposition of toxic substances

Dehydration causes the deposition of toxins in tissues, joints, kidneys, liver, brain, and skin. Water removes these toxin deposits.

43-Morning sickness pregnancy

Water reduces morning sickness in pregnant women

44-Collaboration between brain and body functions

Water improves coordination between brain and body functions. It increases the ability to achieve goals and enhances purposefulness.

45-Amnesia

Water helps prevent memory loss as we age.

46-Addiction

Drinking enough water during the day helps reduce cravings. Of course, you also need nutrients. Proper nutrition is also important.

Functions of water in the body

1-Water is the largest amount of material in the body that fills the empty spaces in the body.

2-Water is the carrier for the circulation of blood cells

3-Water is a solvent for the materials it dissolves, including oxygen.

4-Water is the adhesive that holds the solid parts of the cell together.

5- Water that is free and not bound to anything else can move freely across the cell membrane and turn on the ion pumps.

6. Some of these ion pumps generate electrical voltage. Therefore, the efficiency of the stimulus transmission system depends on the availability of freely moving water in the nervous system.

7-Water is the central regulator of energy and osmotic balance in the body.

8-The food we eat is created by converting energy through electrical energy-generating property of water.

9. Blood consists of 94% water (if you drink enough water). Red blood cells are essentially water bags containing the colored hemoglobin. A lack of water acidifies your body and blood. Your blood clots more easily.

Remember, the term "dehydration" actually refers to concentrated and acidic blood. Acidic , concentrated blood draws water from the cells lining your arteries. This can lead to blood vessel problems.

The rapid flow of blood against the sensitive cells lining the arteries simultaneously causes microscopic abrasions.

The cells are already weakened by a lack of water and are further damaged by the constant toxic effects of acids (concentrated blood). Therefore, we need sufficient water if we want healthy blood. Healthy blood is of paramount importance.

In the early 1900s, Antoine Béchamp (French physician, chemist, and pharmacist) wrote a book about blood. He said that health begins with healthy blood. Biologist Dr. Robert Young studied his work for years and also concluded that health begins with healthy blood.

The 9 points we just mentioned are explained in a little more detail in his book.

When you become dehydrated, your body will store fat

When dehydration occurs because someone doesn't drink enough water, the cells' energy reserves gradually diminish. They then become more dependent on energy generation from food intake than from water.

In this situation, the body is forced to store fat and use its protein and starch reserves. This is because it's easier to break down these substances than to burn the stored fat.

This is one of the main reasons why many people are overweight. Add to that a lot of stress and the wrong foods, and you'll become overweight. Being overweight is a lifestyle issue.

Symptoms of a lack of water

Some symptoms or conditions you can develop due to dehydration. You can be mildly, moderately, or severely dehydrated. Therefore, the symptoms depend on the severity of the dehydration. Most people completely ignore the possibility that their symptom could be dehydration.

Mild dehydration:

Signs that you need to drink water:

1-Sometimes being thirsty

2-Redness in the face

3-Heartburn/stomach pain

4-Constipation

5-Digestive Problems

6- Having pains

7-Lower back pain

8-Headache

9-Bad breath

10-More hunger, more sugar cravings --> less thirst

11-Dizziness

12-Muscle cramps/mild muscle pain

13-Fatigue/being tired

14-Stressed/depressed/irritable/bad mood

15-General weakness

16-Dry mouth and lips

17-Dry eyes

18-Dry skin

19- Have a lot of saliva

20-Dark urine

Moderate to severe dehydration

Some symptoms:

1-High blood pressure

2-Heart and blood vessel problems (thrombosis, strokes, heart failure, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, etc.)

3-Allergy and asthma problems

4-Cancer

5-Chronic fatigue

6-Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

7-Hormonal problems

8- Clotted blood/ thicker blood

9- Dry burning eyes

10-Gout

11-Neurological problems

12-Kidney stones

13- Retaining fat/obesity

14-Elevated cholesterol

15-Elevated triglycerides

16-Arthrosis

17- Muscle pain or other muscle problems

18-Hardening of connective tissue (scleroderma)

19. Dehydration causes acidic blood and body. Acidity is the cause of many diseases.

20. Dehydration also makes detoxification more difficult. As a result, you'll develop symptoms because your waste products can't be removed effectively.

NB: Symptoms are also caused by nutrient deficiencies, consuming too many toxins, and not drinking enough fluids.

But you can reduce many vague symptoms simply by drinking more water and using the right NATURAL salt. Diseases are caused by lifestyle issues. More and more naturopaths and researchers are realizing that we are dehydrated without realizing it.

In his book, the Iranian doctor describes why certain conditions arise from dehydration. He offers a biological explanation of why symptoms arise.

He writes the subtitle of his book

You're not sick, you're thirsty

How much water and salt do I need per day?

We already have salt and water in our bodies in certain quantities. Water and salt play a crucial role in the functioning of our organs and systems. If we have a serious deficiency, our organs, cells, and systems will experience problems.

Water management

Iranian doctor:

Every 24 hours, your body recycles the equivalent of 40,000 glasses of water to perform normal bodily functions. This happens every day of your life.

Within this pattern of water management and reuse, and depending on environmental factors, the body is deficient in approximately 6 to 10 glasses of water each day.

If you think you are different and you think your body doesn't need this, you are making a big mistake.

The body uses between 6 and 8 glasses of water of the total amount of water for essential functions.

The body needs an average of 30ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day, which equates to 8 to 10 glasses of water per day. Water should be consumed throughout the day in portions of 250ml to 500ml.

Salt management

-Dr. Robert Young (American biologist/scientist)

-Dr. Gábor Lenkei (Hungarian doctor)

It's the same with salt. A person weighing 70 kilos has approximately 250 grams of salt in their body.

Dr. Robert Young speaks of 300 to 400 grams of salt in the body. In any case, we have approximately 300 grams of salt in our bodies.

Every body is different, so it can vary from person to person. Salt plays a vital role in the functioning of our organs, such as kidney filtration. A severe salt deficiency could result in death within four hours.

We lose salt daily through mucus, tears, saliva, sweat, urine, bowel movements, and semen. We need to replenish this loss. Everything that can be removed from your body from fluids contains salt. This deficiency also needs to be replenished.

Dr. Robert Young (biologist/scientist) has conducted thorough research on this and concludes that a person weighing 70 kg needs at least 12-14 grams of salt per day . This is calculated based on the amount of salt people lose daily. What we lose, we also need to replenish.

In the video , Dr. Gábor Lenkei explains why we have salt in our bodies and what role it plays in our organs. Very well explained.

27 Wonders of Eating Salt

1-Emotional disorders

Salt is necessary in the treatment of emotional disorders.

2-Stress

Salt is a powerful stress-reducing substance. A lack of salt will cause your nervous system to react strongly. This is because salt facilitates communication and information processing in nerve cells.

3- Generating energy in cells

Salt is essential for generating hydroelectric power in the cells. It is used to generate energy where needed.

4-Communicating nerve cells

Salt is essential for the communication and information processing of the nerve cells during the time that the brain cells are functioning (from conception of the child until death).

5- Muscle cramps

Salt is necessary to prevent muscle cramps.

6-Muscle tension - muscle strength - endurance

Salt is essential for maintaining muscle tone, strength, and endurance. Salt is necessary for optimal muscle function.

7-Libido

Salt can help maintain your libido.

8-Intestines

Salt is essential for the movement of nutrients through the intestines. Diseases begin in the intestines. Your intestines are your second brain.

9-Serotine and melatonin

Salt is necessary for maintaining serotonin and melatonin levels in the brain.

10-Self-confidence and positive self-image

Salt can help you develop self-confidence and a positive self-image. This personality is controlled by serotonin and melatonin.

11- Frequent urination and urine loss

Difficulty in holding urine and urine leakage can be a result of a lack of salt.

12-Deacidification of the urine

Salt is essential for the kidneys to remove excess acid and to prevent acid from entering the urine. Without salt, the body becomes increasingly acidic. An acidic body leads to disease.

13-Prevent Cancer

Salt is also necessary to prevent cancer. The minerals in salt detoxify your body. Cancer cells develop in an acidic body. In a more alkaline body, you have more oxygen, and where there's oxygen, there's life.

14-High blood pressure and irregular heartbeat

Salt can be very effective in stabilizing an irregular heartbeat. Conventional doctors consistently say that salt causes high blood pressure. We're talking about the toxic processed table salt that lacks nutrients and contains many toxins.

Natural salt is packed with nutrients that help balance your heart and blood vessels. Many people drink plenty of water and have a deficiency of pure salt and minerals, meaning insufficient water remains in the bloodstream. In some, this causes fainting, while in others, it causes blood vessel constriction, to the point of measurably high blood pressure.

A little salt will quickly relieve heart palpitations and lower high blood pressure. Drink one to two glasses a day with a small amount of natural salt. Or put a little salt on your tongue. Consult a naturopath for the correct ratio for your healthy eating plan.

15-Varicose veins and couperose

Salt can prevent varicose veins and couperose in the legs.

16-Diabetes

Salt is essential for people with diabetes. It helps balance blood sugar levels and reduces insulin requirements. Water and salt can reduce the severity of associated damage to the eyes and blood vessels.

17-Sleep

Salt is essential for regulating sleep. It's a natural hypnotic agent. See page 225 of the book for proper use.

18-Cleansing of lungs

Salt is essential for clearing the lungs of mucus plugs and sticky mucus, especially in patients with asthma, emphysema, and cystic fibrosis. Salt is a potent antihistamine. It can be used to reduce asthma symptoms: place some salt on your tongue and drink two or three glasses of pure water. This is a healthier inhaler. Inhalers contain toxic substances that can actually cause allergic reactions.

19-Dry cough

Putting salt on your tongue can help reduce a persistent dry cough. Drink plenty of water.

20-Mucosal inflammation

Salt is essential for relieving mucosal inflammation and blocked sinuses.

21-Gout

Salt can help prevent gout.

22-Overproduction of saliva

Salt is essential for preventing overproduction of saliva, which is characterized by drooling during sleep. Constantly having to dab away excess saliva indicates a salt deficiency.

23-Bones and joints

Osteoporosis can be a result of a lack of water and salt in the body. Salt is also absolutely essential for strong bone structure.

24-Reduce double chin

Salt can help reduce a double chin. For a medical explanation, see page 226 of the book.

Below you will find guidelines from Doctor Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, MD

1- Drink before you feel thirsty

If you are thirsty then you are already slightly dehydrated.

2- Constantly replenish lost fluids

Water intake should increase with physical activity, hot weather and increased sweating or with diarrhea and vomiting.

Drink extra water when taking medication. Medications dehydrate your body. Anything chemical or synthetic dehydrates your body even more. People taking medication prescribed by conventional doctors should drink extra water.

Diuretics like coffee and tea, and many medications, remove water and salt from the body, and you'll definitely need to replace the loss. If your urine is light yellow, you're on the right track. You also get water from raw fruits and vegetables.

3- Drink your water warm

Ideally, it's best to drink water at body temperature or warmer. The body also needs sodium; however, it requires the right kind. Choose pure organic salt.

Water needs something to adhere to, and if the body lacks sodium, water isn't absorbed by the blood and cells. Colored salts contain more minerals.

If you have high blood pressure or kidney problems, start with a small amount and gradually increase. Begin with one grain and work your way up. If frequent urination and/or incontinence are a problem, these will be alleviated and eventually no longer an issue. Your bladder will become stronger and its capacity will increase. Seek out a naturopath who is knowledgeable about minerals and salts.

4-Add lemon juice to make your water alkaline

Add lemon juice to hot water in the morning to promote further detoxification. Lemon alkalizes your water.

5- Drink most of your water on an empty stomach

The body becomes dehydrated after just a few hours of sleep. So drink immediately after waking up.

Drink 400 or 500ml of water in the morning before eating anything. Make this a consistent daily practice and part of your morning routine.

Drink water 30 minutes before meals

drink water 2.5 hours after a meal.

6-Raw fruits and vegetables are also good for drinking water

When you eat cooked vegetables or other food, it draws more fluid from your body. Cooking your vegetables also causes a significant loss of nutrients. Freezing your food and then reheating it leaves almost no nutrients.

We've grown up in a society where everything is cooked thoroughly. But this isn't actually all that healthy. Raw food is actually much healthier. Raw food provides your body with significantly more fluids and nutrients. That's why it's recommended to eat a few raw pieces of fruit and vegetables every day. This way, your body absorbs fluids and minerals.

If you eat cooked food and you get thirsty, feel free to drink some water.

Dr. Batmanghelidj's studies, research and books

Studies and activities

Dr. Batmanghelidj, an Iranian who studied in Scotland and England, was born into a politically prominent Iranian family and graduated from Fettes College in Scotland. He also graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School at the University of London, where he studied with Sir Alexander Fleming.

He practiced medicine in the United Kingdom before returning to Iran. In Iran, he played a key role in the development of hospitals and medical centers. He also helped establish youth sports projects in Iran, including the construction and management of the Ice Palace in Tehran. This was reportedly the first ice skating and sports complex in the Middle East.

How did his research begin?

When the violent Iranian revolution broke out in 1979, he was wrongly imprisoned. Dr. Batmanghelidj served two years and seven months as a political prisoner in the notorious Evin Prison. He was 48 at the time. It was there that his research into the healing powers of water began.

The fellow prisoners knew that he was a doctor and came to him for advice.

He began his treatment with water. This was the only remedy he had available. He recorded all symptoms and improvements.

Without any herbs or remedies, he told a stomach ulcer patient with severe abdominal pain to drink two glasses of water a day. The patient's pain disappeared very quickly. He said he later treated more than 3,000 fellow prisoners with various symptoms.

He viewed the prison as a stress laboratory, a unique environment in which to draw clinical conclusions about the healing properties of water.

The warden offered him early release, but he asked to stay a little longer to do more research.

Dr. Batmanghelidj remained in prison for another four months to conduct clinical observations of the prisoners' responses to the use of water to treat stress-related health problems. He began to deeply understand the nature of the symptoms related to water, or rather, to the lack of water.

After his most famous book, "Your Body's Many Cries for Water," he also wrote about the importance of salt. Water and salt need each other in the body.

Salt has the ability to absorb water into the body, helping with cellular hydration. Anyone learning about the importance of drinking water and salt intake should be aware that not just any type of water or salt is suitable.

Consuming the wrong type of water and/or salt can have harmful effects on health. Therefore, we must also be critical about the type of salt and water we consume.

In addition to water quantity, the quality of water and salt absorbed into the body is of primary importance.

He emigrated to America

After his release from prison in 1982, Dr. Batmanghelidj came to the United States and continued his research on the role of water metabolism in the human body. He published several other books, gave lectures, and presented scientific articles at U.S. and international conferences.

He founded the Foundation for the Simple in Medicine and Global Health Solutions, a Falls Church-based publishing company, to promote public awareness of the health benefits of water.
