Discussion of collagen benefits

1-What influence does collagen have on the skin, cellulite and aging.

What does collagen do?

Collagen is constantly being destroyed and regenerated as part of our body's natural cycle. Our body is constantly maintaining and repairing connective tissue.

As we age, our collagen breakdown accelerates. This is when we begin to see and feel the effects of lower collagen levels.

Environmental factors

Besides the natural aging process, there are environmental causes of decreased collagen. Environmental factors that contribute to its destruction include:

-Stress

-Toxins in food and water

-Processed sugar

-Processed foods

-Smoking

-Nutrient deficiency

-High radiation

Antioxidants play a protective role against free radical damage. They also support the formation and absorption of collagen in various tissues. The most important antioxidant for this is vitamin C, which protects and stimulates collagen production. Coenzyme Q10 and vitamin E are also important players.

Why is collagen good for the skin?

Increasing collagen levels can help your skin look firmer, improve smoothness, and allow your skin cells to continue to renew and repair themselves normally.

Collagen helps form elastin and other compounds in the skin, improving its elasticity and moisture content. The hyaluronic acid it contains retains water and forms a gel-like substance that hydrates the skin and hair.

It's one of the best ways to maintain your skin's youthful tone, texture, and radiance. It's considered the number one collagen benefit for good reason.

Research 1

According to a randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled study, it also helps counteract the effects of aging and collagen loss, such as looser skin, more wrinkles and less elasticity.

Research 2

Another double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the anti-aging properties of collagen in women aged 35-55 found that it could significantly improve skin elasticity, skin moisture content, and transepidermal water content.

The dose was 2.5-5 grams of collagen hydrolysate, once daily for eight weeks, used by women aged 35-55. See article

Reduces cellulite and stretch marks

Collagen helps reduce the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks. When our levels are low, the skin loses its elasticity and becomes thinner. This makes cellulite and stretch marks more noticeable.

By strengthening the dermis layer of our skin, collagen plays a key role in concealing cellulite. Collagen supplementation has been shown to improve skin elasticity and thickness. This is important for concealing subcutaneous fat cells and reducing the appearance of cellulite and stretch marks. See article

2- Reduces joint pain and degeneration

Have you ever felt like you have "skeletal legs," the kind that feel extra stiff and ache when you move? That's likely a collagen loss, but luckily, taking collagen for joints can help.

When we lose this essential protein, our connective tissues (including our tendons and ligaments) become less mobile, leading to stiffness, swollen joints, painful joints, etc....

With its gel-like, smooth structure that coats and holds our bones together, collagen allows us to glide and move without pain. Think of consuming more collagen as lubricating a creaking door hinge.

Collagen helps your joints move more easily, reduces pain and even reduces the risk of joint damage.

A 2019 study even found that collagen is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis and other joint pain and conditions.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of collagen peptides in osteoarthritis has shown that collagen is a “potential therapeutic agent as a dietary supplement for the treatment of osteoarthritis and the maintenance of joint health.” See article

Another study published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences shows that people with osteoarthritis and joint pain treated with type 2 collagen show significant improvements in their daily activities, such as climbing stairs, getting up, or sleeping, and an overall improvement in their quality of life. See article

This study found that collagen improves pain and function in people with osteoarthritis and other arthritic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. See article

It has also been shown to improve joint pain in athletes. Supplementation can be an effective strategy for repairing and strengthening joints, tendons, and ligaments, and reducing joint pain. See article

3- Helps with leaky gut

Leaky gut , also known as leaky gut or increased intestinal permeability, is a condition in which the lining of the intestinal wall becomes damaged and overly permeable. This allows harmful substances—such as undigested food particles, bacteria, and toxins—to enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body. This can lead to an overreaction of the immune system, inflammatory reactions, and even autoimmune diseases.

Of course, you should address the underlying cause, but in cases of leaky gut, collagen can be very helpful. It helps break down proteins and soothes the intestinal wall, repairs damaged cell walls, and provides the intestines with amino acids. See article .

The biggest digestive benefit of consuming more collagen is that it helps form connective tissue, sealing and healing the protective lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Today, we know that many diseases can actually be traced back to inflammation or irritation stemming from an unhealthy gut.

Research has shown that serum collagen concentrations are reduced in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. See article

Supplementing with collagen peptides may help treat gastrointestinal symptoms and inflammation, including leaky gut syndrome, IBS, acid reflux, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. See article

In addition to helping treat leaky gut, collagen benefits also include aiding in the absorption of water in the intestines, allowing things to move out of the body more freely.

4. Increases metabolism, muscle mass and energy production

Source Dr. Josh Axe:

A boost of collagen can help increase your metabolism by adding lean muscle mass to your body and aiding in the metabolism of essential nutrients.

One of glycine's most important roles is helping to build muscle tissue by converting glucose into energy that fuels the muscle cells. Remember, maintaining muscle mass is crucial as you age, as it supports posture and bone health.

That's not all glycine can do for your metabolism. Research shows that glycine also plays a vital role in both the digestive and central nervous systems, which play a significant role in maintaining a healthy, youthful body.

Glycine appears to help slow the effects of aging by improving the body's use of antioxidants and is also used in the construction of healthy cells from DNA and RNA. See article

In addition, arginine has been found to stimulate the body's ability to make proteins, which is important for repairing muscle tissue, treating wounds, preventing tissue wasting, boosting metabolism, and aiding proper growth and development. See article

Supports a healthy metabolism

Collagen supports a healthy metabolism. It provides cofactors such as glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, and important electrolyte minerals.

It also provides a good amount of the amino acid glycine. Glycine plays a key role in helping build muscle tissue by converting glucose into energy to fuel muscle cells. This allows it to add lean muscle mass and aid in the metabolism of essential nutrients.

It contains the amino acids arginine and glutamine and also supports metabolism in other ways. Arginine increases the body's ability to make proteins from other amino acids, while glutamine provides carbon and nitric oxide, which are important for building and maintaining muscle. Glutamine also provides fuel to our cells to maintain energy levels. See article.

For anyone trying to lose weight, collagen can support your weight-loss efforts. It stimulates the release of satiety hormones into the bloodstream, which can help reduce appetite.

Collagen can also support weight loss efforts because it's very filling. One study found that collagen is 40% more filling than other protein powders. Participants also consumed 20% less at their next meal than those who consumed whey, casein, or soy protein powders. Using high-quality collagen powder can be an effective strategy for boosting metabolism and losing weight. See article

5- Strengthens nails, hair, teeth and your bones

Have you ever suffered from chipped and splitting nails? Well, a collagen deficiency could be the reason.

Collagen protein is the building block of your nails, hair, and teeth. Adding it to your diet can help keep your nails strong and potentially reverse the signs of hair loss.

A study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that “a critical relationship exists between extracellular matrix (ECM) and hair follicle regeneration, suggesting that collagen's benefits may include its potential as a therapeutic target for hair loss and other skin-related diseases.”

Another double-blind, placebo-controlled study concluded that adult women taking collagen experienced improvements in overall hair volume, scalp coverage, and hair body thickness after 90 days. Additional improvements after 180 days included hair shine, moisture retention, and skin smoothness. See article

Collagen strengthens bones, teeth and nails

Did you know that bones are made up of about a third of collagen? It's what gives bones their flexibility. Adding more of this collagen protein to your diet can strengthen your bones by increasing bone mineral density.

Improving bone mineral density is also vital to ensure that your teeth remain securely in your jaw.

It can also strengthen bones by stimulating osteoblasts. Osteoblasts are the cells that form bone. Because of this ability, numerous studies have shown that collagen supplementation can prevent and even reverse osteoporosis. See article

It helps maintain healthy teeth and gum tissue. In fact, collagen fibers help anchor our teeth to our gums. Collagen is present in the dental papilla, the part of the gum next to the teeth, in the tooth germ, and in the enamel of the teeth. Finally, supplementation can also prevent brittle and broken nails and support nail growth. See article

6- Improves liver health

Source: Dr. David Jockers

Supports the liver and detoxification

The liver is the largest organ in the body and the primary organ for detoxification. It has detoxification pathways that filter the blood to remove large toxins and enzymatically break down unwanted chemicals.

It's also designed to convert toxins into compounds that can be eliminated from the body. As you're exposed to more toxins, the liver's ability to detoxify can weaken. This can lead to toxins being stored in our tissues and cells instead of being eliminated.

The glycine found in collagen can aid in detoxification and reduce liver damage from toxins. Glycine has even been shown to prevent liver damage and minimize alcohol-related liver damage.

It also helps the digestive system eliminate waste and improves the body's use of antioxidants. Antioxidants support the body's detoxification system. See article

Source: Dr. Josh Axe

If you want to detoxify your body, improve blood flow, and keep your heart young, collagen is extremely beneficial. This is because glycine helps minimize damage to your liver when it absorbs foreign substances, toxins, or alcohol that shouldn't pass through.

One of the easiest ways to quickly cleanse your liver is with bone broth. I often recommend a three-day bone broth detox to help quickly repair leaky gut. This can help your body clear out chemicals and "reset" your gut, improving overall immune function.

Research has even shown that glycine can be used to help reduce alcohol-induced liver damage and other forms of acute or chronic liver injury. See article

7- Protects cardiovascular health

Source: Dr. David Jockers

Protects the heart

Collagen keeps your heart healthy. Because collagen is the most abundant protein in the heart, it provides a structural framework for heart muscle cells. It also stiffens the heart walls and promotes force transmission so the heart can pump blood. See article .

The walls of blood vessels are made of collagen and elastin.

-It keeps the blood vessels strong

-The skin smoothes the inside of arteries and veins

-It keeps blood pressure under control.

-The amino acids proline and lysine help break down plaque deposits and repair tissue in the arteries.

Source: Dr. Josh Axe

The amino acid proline helps your artery walls release fatty deposits into the bloodstream, reducing the size of the fat in your arteries and minimizing their buildup. Proline is essential for tissue repair in your joints and arteries – and it helps control blood pressure.

As a component of collagen found in joints, it protects our bodies from the effects of vibration and shock and helps maintain valuable cartilage as we age. It's also linked to the prevention of arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), as it helps keep our arteries free of dangerous plaque buildup. See article.

Additionally, arginine aids in the production of nitric oxide, which promotes better vasodilation – meaning that arteries dilate and muscle cells and blood vessels relax, allowing for better blood circulation.

Dosage and use of collagen

If you are looking for an oral collagen supplement, choose a hydrolyzed collagen peptide product.

Look for terms like "collagen peptides," "collagen hydrolysate," or "hydrolyzed collagen" on your supplement's ingredients label to make sure you're getting the real deal.

Some sell types 1 and 2 together, while others sell a mix of different types. It's ideal to choose a mix of different collagen types.

Dose of collagen

Research has shown that adults can safely consume between 2.5 and 15 grams of collagen per day. Many people take 1-2 tablespoons of collagen powder per day. You should weigh a tablespoon yourself.

Taste

Collagen is nearly odorless and tasteless.

You can mix collagen in

-Water

-Smoothie

-herbal tea

-coffee

-Protein shake

-Soup (add at the very end. Do not boil)

We sell fish collagen (types 1 and 3) in the Healthy World News webshop. See webshop .
